Every Fall Team AOII raises money for the National Arthritis Foundation and takes part in Lets Move Together. It’s a three mile walk along Columbus Georgia’s beautiful Riverwalk. Our goal is to raise funds for the National Arthritis Foundation, so they can continue their mission to help over 46 million people who are affected by this disease. Nationally each year AOII has funded more than one million dollars in grants in support of arthritis research and programs, and we want to continue our support.
2009 Lets Walk Together for the National Arthritis Foundation
AOII Strike Out!
The national philanthropy of Alpha Omicron Pi, Strike Out Arthritis, raises money for Juvenile Arthritis and Arthritis Research. It was chosen as AOII's national philanthropy because it is the nation's leading cause of disability. Since adopting the cause in 1967, Alpha Omicron Pi has raised over $1.5 million dollars for arthritis grants and research. Though Juvenile Arthritis is the organization's national philanthropy, many chapters also support local causes.
It may begin with a swollen knuckle, a spiking fever, or an unexplainable rash. But no matter what symptoms appear, hearing the word "arthritis" in a diagnosis for a child can be unexpected and confusing.
Arthritis is an inflammation of the joints that is characterized by swelling, heat and pain. Nearly 300,000 children in the United States have some form of arthritis. Arthritis can be short-term -- lasting for just a few weeks or months, then going away forever -- or it can be chronic and last for months or years. In rare cases, it can last a lifetime.
The most prevalent form of juvenile arthritis is juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, or JRA. It affects approximately 50,000 children in the United States. JRA also called juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) because it is very different from adult rheumatoid arthritis.
What Causes JRA?
It's not known exactly what causes JRA in kids. Research indicates that it is an autoimmune disease. In autoimmune diseases, white blood cells lose the ability to tell the difference between the body's own healthy cells and harmful invaders like bacteria and viruses. The immune system, which is supposed to protect the body from these harmful invaders, instead releases chemicals that can damage healthy tissues and cause inflammation and pain.
To effectively manage and minimize the effects of arthritis, an early and accurate diagnosis is essential. By understanding the symptoms and characteristics of each type of JRA, you can help your child maintain an active, productive lifestyle.
Strike Out Spring 2010
The Delta Lambda chapter of Alpha Omicron Pi had a great turnout at their second annual Spring 2010 philanthropy event, Strike Out held at Peach Bowl Lanes February 20th. The great turnout also made this year's Strike Out a huge success. The Delta Lambda chapter of Alpha Omicron Pi doubled the amount they previously earned at their first Strike Out event held last year in Spring 2009. In addition to signing up teams to bowl, they also held a silent auction and sold ‘Strike Out Arthritis’ t-shirts at the bowling alley. All proceeds went to the National Arthritis Foundation. As additional incentive, teams were awarded trophies for first, second and third place. The Tau Kappa Epsilon team was one of those winning teams awarded with a bowling trophy. The trophies served not only as a reward for triumph in beating the other teams, but also as a nice thank you gift for helping to support one of their fellow Greek organizations, AOII. Teams were excited to simultaneously be able to participate in raising money and awareness for the National Arthritis Foundation and be able to add a little friendly competition to the night.
